Nine Inch Nails fertig?

As I said before, i'm not just limiting this site to the deep underground stuff.

Nine Inch Nails. Everyone knows them, and most of you have probably seen them play. I sadly did not manage to make it to any of their concerts. I know, shame on me right?
Even though I work at a radio station and usually know what is going on with a band that big I didn't hear until very recently about their final tour. I couldn't believe that it took me that long to hear, but I can't say that I am surprised. When you are in the business for 20 years, you need some long breaks. One thing that I can't see happening is that NIN will be done forever. For someone like Mr. Trent Reznor, there is no such thing as an end. It's in his blood, and he won't be able to help but come back to his fans.

A good detox might help with some of the music. I can say for sure that I am a much bigger fan of his older stuff. The broken film was genius. It's a bit intense at some points, but if you havn't seen it yet you must watch it. I would love to see Trent produce some more stuff like that. But as usual bands evolve and don't usually go back to old styles.

Fear not. They will return.

  1. i'm honestly a bit hesitant about trent having a huge comeback. i certainly don't think that he's done creating music and doubt that he'll stop anytime during his lifetime. but in reference to nine inch nails specifically- the absolutely incredible industrial project trent has been blessing the world with since 1988- thattt i'm not so sure will resurface. trent is no longer the same angry, outspoken, drug-addicted kid he was at the start of his musical crusade. he may have been willing to sacrifice personal relationships/a family/children/whatever else when he was 20-some years old, but after successfully producing 8 albums (12 including remixes..?) throughout the span of twenty years...you can't expect the guy to maintain the same mentality. he got lonely. he started paying more attention to aspects of his life that he previously neglected. and now, our beloved trent is engaged. he's progressed as a person and so has his career as a rockstar. trent may still be a musical genius, but one can't realistically expect a similar outcome from him as before now that he holds a new lifestyle and perspective. "head like a hole, black as your soul, i'd rather die than give you control" doesn't exactly sound like lyrics that would come from a lovestruck, middle-aged man. so many of the emotions that nine inch nails has been based upon are no longer a part of trent. if nine inch nails continued to release new music, it wouldn't be the same; things would only go downhill. it's a trend that has happened to other artists before. take alanis morissette. whether or not one actually likes her music, it can be agreed upon that she is a rather sucessful singer. jagged little pill, one of her angsty, earlier albums, is still one of the biggest selling debut albums of all times. that was released back in 1995. fast forward to 2002 when the singer began dating ryan reynolds. go forward another two years to 2004. morissette produces a sixth album, so-called chaos. is it merely a coincidence that her lowest selling album was released the same year that she also happily announced her engagement? i think not. with morissette's budding love life came a decline in her career as an artist, and the same thing could easily happen to trent. a part of me truly hates to say this, but i believe that trent has made a wise decision in putting nine inch nails on hiatus, and i wouldn't be terribly surprised if it denoted the conclusion of the band all together.

  2. Thanks for the comment!
You do have a lot of good points there. As I said the music evolves over time. They aren't in the same situation as when they started. I was watching an interview with Rammstein and they said "we are not angry anymore, like we were when we started the band." I probably should have gone over this and made the post a little bit longer.
Everyone is just going to have to accept what NIne Inch Nails has become, and crack out on his old stuff. Haha. Just because Trent's music is no longer in your face angry doesn't mean it will be bad.
At least that is what I am hoping for.
